Florence Hawkins

I am a French designer, based in Brixton, South London. After graduating with an MA in Art History in France, I was eager to travel. I first ventured to London, then New York and eventually settled in London.

Always fascinated by the wallpaper designs my grand-father had all over his house in Burgundy, I later returned to this interest in 2005 and enrolled as a mature student on the ‘Surface Design’ course at the London College of Communication .

Some time after I started working on this same course as a print technician. This showed me how much I enjoyed teaching and connecting with students to help them with their projects.

Within the College premisses I started to take part and initiate projects and workshops committed to sustainability. In my personal work I began to explore natural dye printing possibilities on textile and paper.

This ongoing research fuels my creative aspirations to contribute to a better understanding and respect of our natural resources. Making colour pastes from bio waste and foraged plants for printing as well as looking at possibilities of more sustainable textile and bio material is the research focus of my practice.

Connecting and sharing with others eco-conscience designers and artists is essential to build relevant knowledge and experiences. Each collaboration, whether workshop or project, inspires and triggers more interesting and exciting prospects.

Welcome collaborations and commissions.
